Memories at the Drive-In

Enjoy a summer evening at the Stars and Stripes Drive-In

Summer is here and what better way to spend an evening than with your family at the drive-in? The Stars and Stripes Drive-In, located in Lubbock, is a place for families to make memories and enjoy an experience like no other.

The Stars and Stripes Drive-In was opened in August 2003 by Ryan Smith, but the passion for drive-in theaters in his family goes back for more than 70 years.

Smith’s grandfather started the Sky-Vue Drive-In in Lamesa in 1948, and growing up, he had always heard stories of the family business. From his mom working in the concession stand from the time she could see over the counter, to his grandmother parking the car full of kids near the box office so she could sell tickets but still be able to keep an eye on them, the stories were endless. While he had always heard stories of the drive-in, Smith had never been to a drive-in until 2002 when he went back to the Sky-Vue. That is where he fell in love with the experience and wanted to preserve and share that experience with others.

“I love the people and the outdoors. Seeing families come together to make memories is the best part of my job,” Smith said.

Since opening in 2003, Stars and Stripes has grown, adding a third screen and playground to their location in Lubbock. In 2015, they expanded and opened a second location in New Braunfels where they also have three screens. On each screen plays double features, and each location can hold over 1,000 cars.

Take a trip to this family-friendly drive-in to enjoy good food, good movies and a unique experience.
