What Happens When You Call 811

A simple phone call helps you stay safe during home projects

Planning a digging project? Don’t forget to call 811 first! It’s the law in Texas and a crucial step to avoid hitting underground utilities.

Dial 811: Contact Texas811 several business days before you plan to dig.

Share Details: Provide your project location, what type of work you will be doing and when.

Wait for Marking: Within a few days, utility companies, including MidSouth Electric Co-op, will mark underground lines with color-coded flags or paint:

  • Red: Electric
  • Yellow: Natural Gas
  • Orange: Telecommunications
  • Blue: Water
  • Green: Sewage

Dig Safely: Once marked, dig at least 18-24 inches away from utility lines.

The 811 campaign is managed by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), an organization dedicated to protecting underground utilities and public safety.

Stay safe – call 811 before you dig! For more information, visit texas811.org.
