Although spring and summer bring warmer weather, the seasons also create ideal conditions for severe storms.
MidSouth Electric Cooperative crews work year-round to maintain power line rights-of-way, preventing fallen trees or limbs from disrupting your electricity. Should severe storms cause outages, our linemen are on standby and take all necessary precautions before restoring power.
To prepare and protect your family, follow these readiness essentials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
- Stock a three-day supply of nonperishable food, including bottled water, canned goods, energy bars, peanut butter and other essentials.
- Equip first-aid kits with pain relievers, bandages and other medical essentials, including current prescriptions.
- Confirm adequate sanitation and hygiene supplies, including soap, towelettes and hand sanitizer.
- Set aside basic household items, including flashlights, batteries and a battery-powered radio.
- Organize emergency supplies in an easily accessible location.
- In the event of a prolonged power outage, unplug major appliances, TVs and other sensitive electronics to prevent potential power surge damage and circuit overloads during restoration.
- If you plan to use a portable generator, ensure its ability to handle your power needs and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation. Never use a generator indoors.
- Should severe storms cause downed power lines, always assume lines are energized and never approach. If flooding occurs, never walk through areas where power lines could be submerged.
- Follow trusted local news sources and MidSouth EC’s website and Facebook page for restoration updates.
- Report outages using the MSEC app or by texting “OUTAGE” to 352-667.
Mother Nature can be hard to predict. Plan today because storm preparedness is always our best defense.
