Back to School and Better Connected

The Owl’s Nest after-school program provides a supportive environment

With the school year kicking off soon, many families across MidSouth Electric Cooperative’s territory are looking for more than pencils and planners—they’re on the lookout for safe, supportive after-school options for their children. In Anderson, the Owl’s Nest Afterschool Program may be an answer.

Founded by Anderson-Shiro Elementary School teachers Rebecca Cawthon and JJ Oller, the Owl’s Nest provides a safe and structured environment focused on homework help, tutoring, activities and meaningful connections.

“As teachers, we saw the growing need in our community for a space where students could get academic support beyond school hours and the everyday hustle of family life,” Oller says. “We wanted to help with the after-school business so our community could focus on family time.”

That vision has taken off and is making a real difference.

What also sets the Owl’s Nest apart this school year is its commitment to digital safety and access. As a MidSouth Fiber Internet subscriber, the program now has fast, reliable internet that allows students to complete online assignments, access educational platforms and safely explore the web.

“MidSouth Fiber plays a vital role in helping us run smoothly,” Oller says. “The reliable internet allows us to stay in touch with families through our check-in app, stream fun songs and support students with online assignments.”

MidSouth Fiber’s high-speed internet ensures the Owl’s Nest can support modern learning needs, offering peace of mind for parents and educators who know their kids are using a secure and dependable network built here in their community. This access helps bridge the digital divide for students who may not have strong internet access at home, giving every child the same opportunity to succeed.

Beyond connectivity, the connection to community makes this program soar. Since opening, the Owl’s Nest has become a trusted space for students, thanks to the passion of its founders, whose local roots run deep.

Cawthon’s husband co-owns Circle Star Firearms, and Oller and her husband own Grimes County Body Shop—both prominent businesses in Anderson. Their local roots and commitment to giving back reflect the same care for community that drives MidSouth EC and MidSouth Fiber.

Cawthon and Oller welcome community support and hope others will be part of their story. Whether it’s volunteering your time, donating supplies, sponsoring a student or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to get involved. Impactful programs like the Owl’s Nest thrive with the support of a community that believes in meaningful connections.

The Owl’s Nest is open to first through sixth grade students on weekdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m., following the Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District calendar. Enrollment is limited, and registration opens August 1. Call (936) 306-2114 or email [email protected] to register.
