Breaking Down Your Electric Bill

Understanding what it all means

If you’ve been wondering what everything that shows up on your bill means, here is a handy guide that will help.

1. Message Window: Look here for important news, notices and updates from your cooperative.

2. Member Information: Shows your member and account numbers, phone and email.

3. Due date and total due: Includes the balance due and the due date. If you miss the due date, you need to pay the amount shown below it, which includes late fees.

4. Billing Overview: A breakdown of the account balance for the billing period. Turn the bill over and look at section 10 to get a more detailed breakdown of charges.

5. Payment Stub: If you pay your bill by mail, return this portion with a payment in the provided envelope. Be sure to write in the amount enclosed in the designated box.

6. Service Description: Whatever is printed here is how we describe your meter location in our system. It can be updated if it is wrong or if you have multiple meters and changing the description would make it easier to identify a location.

7. Your Account: Shows your account number, which is what you should use when making payments through Medina EC’s automated system; your meter number, which is helpful when reporting an outage; and the rate code being applied to your account. You can see rate codes and the rates that go along with them at MedinaEC.org/Rates.

8. Your Energy Use: These numbers tell you how much electricity you used during the dates shown. By registering for our free SmartHub tool, you can see this use broken down by the day, which can really help you analyze your use and save money. Get SmartHub as an app or at MedinaEC.org.

9. Compare: Use these numbers to compare your current use to last month and the same time last year. Keep in mind that weather and temperatures impact use. If you used more or less, think about possible reasons. Was it because you did something different or because the weather changed?

10. Your Charges: This is a breakdown of what makes up your total. Every bill differs, and if you don’t understand any of the charges listed, you can call 1-866-MEC-ELEC (632-3532) to discuss them. Learn more about PCRF—the power cost recovery factor—and other charges at MedinaEC.org/Rates. The capital credit refund you see here happens once a year, if approved based on the co-op’s financial position. Read more about capital credits at MedinaEC.org/CapCred.

11. Updates: If you change your mailing address, phone number or email, let us know by filling in your new information here and returning the payment stub to us.
