Hurricane season in Texas runs from June 1 to the end of November. Being prepared is a good way to minimize anxiety and fear. Ensure you have a plan in place ahead of time and most importantly, stock up on emergency supplies well in advance of a potential disaster.
Prepare early by taking advantage of this year’s sales tax holiday. Purchase qualifying emergency preparation supplies tax-free.
The 2023 Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 22, and ends at midnight Monday, April 24.
The following emergency supplies qualify for tax exemption if purchased for less than the price thresholds listed below:
Less than $3,000
• Portable generators
Less than $300
• Emergency ladders
• Hurricane shutters
Less than $75
• Axes
• Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt)
• Can openers—nonelectric
• Carbon monoxide detectors
• Coolers and ice chests for food storage—nonelectric
• Fire extinguishers
• First-aid kits
• Fuel containers
• Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
• Hatchets
• Ice products—reusable and artificial
• Light sources—portable self-powered (including battery operated) Examples include: candles, flashlights and lanterns.
• Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers
• Radios—portable self-powered (including battery-operated) two-way and weather band radios included.
• Smoke detectors
• Tarps and other plastic sheeting
