The Cooperative Spirit at Work

Local fundraising helps bring reliable electric service to Haitians

Local residents, The HILCO Civic & Event Center and employees of HEC recently joined efforts to raise money for lineman Michael Grisham’s Electrify Haiti relief fund.

HCEC’s I Mainly Run My Mouth fun run on September 8 raised roughly $1,000. At the event, employees and community members gathered for a quick 0.35K walk/run. The following month, HILCO employees participated in Itasca’s Fall Scarecrow Contest, and a HILCO team placed first with its lineman scarecrow, winning $100. The team donated its winnings to the relief fund.

In February 2016, Grisham and fellow lineman Clayton Thompson had the opportunity to partner with NRECA International, assisting other volunteers in bringing reliable power to people in villages near Caracol, Haiti. Since then, Grisham has raised more than $2,000 for the cause through various efforts.

HILCO’s mission is to provide services based on the Seven Cooperative Principles—including Concern for Community—and while this concern was more than 1,700 miles away, its impact is sure to have a profound effect. Many Haitians will benefit from having electricity thanks to those who volunteered their time and expertise to help.
