Breaking Ground

Construction begins for new RGC office

Medina Electric Cooperative board members, employees and community members from the Rio Grande City area gathered early Tuesday, August 22, to break ground at the site of the cooperative’s new Rio Grande City office.

The new office will be located at 601 N. FM 3167, at the intersection of Monarch Lane and FM 3167, near a DPS office and one of the Ideas schools in the area. This location will replace the current Rio Grande City office. The project is slated to take 11 months to complete, and the cooperative’s goal is to have the office staffed and operational by August of 2018. Cooperative Building Solutions is managing the project for Medina Electric.

Medina Electric first began serving the Rio Grande City area out of a building at Fort Ringgold. The co-op moved to the building at 2235 FM 755 in the 1970s, originally leasing it. In 1992, the cooperative purchased the building, where they still office today.

With staff and equipment outgrowing the current office, the board of directors recognized the need for a new building. They began searching for a suitable location in the Rio Grande City area a few years ago. After reviewing many options, they settled on this piece of land adjacent to the Heritage Vista del Norte Subdivision and purchased it in 2015.
