Winter is the season for celebration and laughter. Use these safety tips to keep your home filled with smiles.
Lights
- Purchase LED lights. LED lights stay cool to the touch and last 25 times longer than your old incandescents.
- Install programmable outdoor timers to ensure lighting is turned off before bed.
- Avoid overloading outlets to decrease blown fuses and risk of fire.
Heating Equipment
- Keep space heaters out of high-traffic areas and at least 3 feet away from flammable items.
- Turn off and unplug space heaters when not in use. Never use extension cords or power strips with space heaters.
- Confirm the chimney is free of debris before use. Do not leave a lit fireplace unattended.
Trees
- Fresh trees need a constant source of water, so refill your real tree’s stand daily. Heated rooms will dry out fresh trees faster.
- Ensure artificial trees are flame resistant. Place trees at least 3 feet away from all heat sources or open flames.
- Inspect electrical decorations before use. Never use lights with damaged bulbs or cords.
Outdoor Décor
- Use lights and cords manufactured for outdoor use. Fasten lights securely with clips instead of nails or tacks.
- Confirm cords and plugs are not frayed, cracked or broken.
- Keep three points of contact when climbing ladders. Be mindful of overhead power lines while installing décor.
