“Because the orange-flavored jelly slices always ended up in the ‘discard’ pile at Halloween, my mother sought out a recipe that a friend of hers had made. My mom, never leaving a recipe alone, tweaked it, and these became a favorite—enough so that she had to buy the ‘dreaded’ candy.”

3/4 cup sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup butter or shortening (or 1/2 cup each)
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups oats
1/2 cup corn flakes
1 cup orange-flavored jelly slice candies, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
Coarse turbinado sugar for sprinkling

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease baking sheets.

2. With an electric mixer, cream together sugars and butter or shortening until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, and beat well.

3. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add in thirds to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.

4. Stir in the oats, corn flakes and the orange candy pieces. If using butter, chill the dough about 30 minutes before baking.

5. Drop by tablespoons onto baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake 10–12 minutes or until lightly browned.

6. Remove cookies to a wire rack, sprinkle with turbinado sugar and let cool completely.

Editor’s Tip:

For more orange flavor, add 1–2 teaspoons orange zest.

Cook’s Tip:

Use scissors dipped in warm water to cut jelly slices more easily.
