Hooked These Readers
What excellent photos by Erich Schlegel [Wet Texas, May 2026]. It was a delight to enjoy the vistas of the western part of our state and share its beauty.

There was perfect timing with the photo of Blue Hole (above) capturing a large catfish resting on a ledge.

There appears to be a large flathead catfish swimming. As an avid fisherman, this caught my attention.

Finding Fossils
I have all my life had fun searching for arrowheads and fossils in Texas [He Kept Digging, May 2026].

We Wuz Informed
The winner of your My favorite Texas saying is … Finish This Sentence feature was a bit too cleaned up from the original [May 2026]. I can still, after 80-some years, hear my father saying, “The sun has riz, the sun has set, and we ain’t left Texas yet.”

A Red Flag?
There is a picture of a lady refilling her hummingbird feeders with red-colored water [Fast and Curious, April 2026]. I have always been told to never use red dye in the water.

Editor’s note: Author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers explains, “It’s highly recommended that you don’t use red dye. The Browns say they add only a drop or two to each gallon of sugar water mixture, and that’s so they can see the water levels in their feeders.”

With Chocolate on Top
I read Our Kind of Weird [December 2025] and couldn’t believe it.
When my husband and I were first dating, his mom invited us over for breakfast. I asked her what we were having and how I could help. She said biscuits and chocolate gravy, and you can make the gravy.
Whoa, did you just say chocolate gravy? You put chocolate gravy on biscuits? Yes, it’s the best way to have biscuits. I tried it and was sold.

I grew up in a small farming town in Tennessee and first had this yummy dish as a child made by my aunt Inez. Her daughter made it and passed the simple recipe to me.
Many folks over the decades have never heard of this here in Texas, but if you are a chocolate lover, there is nothing better than this gravy with hot biscuits.

Set in Bricks
The Dirt Church Down a Dirt Road [December 2025] took me way back to 1959 when I visited the site of the set for The Alamo film during its construction. I got to see them making the adobe bricks and all the buildings that the bricks were used to build.
