Using Spare Change to Create Change

Members making a difference by donating pennies

Operation round up got its start in 2006 at Medina Electric Cooperative. Since then, our members have made more than $109,000 in donations possible. Without the participation of our members, and without the needs in the communities we serve, ORU would not exist. A few pennies really do make an impact.

Participating in ORU

Members who participate in the ORU program will never give more than $11.88 per meter per year, so it is a very affordable way to make a difference. More than 2,000 members have already made the monthly commitment to donate their spare change. Members who participate in ORU allow the cooperative to round their monthly electric bill up to the next whole dollar. You can sign up online, through an easy form at MedinaEC.org/ORU, by visiting one of our offices, or by calling us at 1-866-MEC-ELEC (632-3532) and we will mail you a form.

Applying For Funds From ORU

The spare change that members donate goes into the ORU fund, which is then given to organizations and individuals that indicate a need through an application process. If you would like to apply for ORU funds for yourself, your organization or on behalf of someone else, you can do so by filling out the application at MedinaEC.org/ORU. The next application deadline is May 5.

All applications are reviewed by the ORU Trust Committee, made up of Medina EC members, and they ultimately make the decision on donations. This money has helped members with medical bills, helped people after devastating fires and donated to organizations that provide important services to the communities served by Medina EC.
